37a. As-Saffat (1 to 50)
By those who set the ranks in battle order, And those who drive away ( the wicked ) with reproof, And those who read ( the Word ) for a reminder , Lo! thy Lord is surely One …
وَالصَّافَّاتِ صَفًّا (1)
Waalssaffati saffan
By those who set the ranks in battle order
فَالزَّاجِرَاتِ زَجْرًا (2)
Faalzzajirati zajran
And those who drive away ( the wicked ) with reproof
فَالتَّالِيَاتِ ذِكْرًا (3)
Faalttaliyati thikran
And those who read ( the Word ) for a reminder ,
إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمْ لَوَاحِدٌ (4)
Inna ilahakum lawahidun
Lo! thy Lord is surely One .
رَّبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الْمَشَارِقِ (5)
Rabbu alssamawati waalardi wama baynahuma warabbu almashariqi
Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them , and Lord of the sun ' s risings .
إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ (6)
Inna zayyanna alssamaa alddunya bizeenatin alkawakibi
Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament , the planets :
وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَّارِدٍ (7)
Wahifthan min kulli shaytanin maridin
With security from every froward devil .
لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ (8)
La yassammaAAoona ila almalai alaAAla wayuqthafoona min kulli janibin
They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side ,
دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ (9)
Duhooran walahum AAathabun wasibun
Outcast , and theirs is a perpetual torment ;
إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ (10)
Illa man khatifa alkhatfata faatbaAAahu shihabun thaqibun
Save him who snatcheth a fragment , and there pursueth him a piercing flame .
فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَا ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍ (11)
Faistaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqna inna khalaqnahum min teenin lazibin
Then ask them ( O Muhammad ) : Are they stronger as a creation , or those ( others ) whom We have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay .
بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ (12)
Bal AAajibta wayaskharoona
Nay , but thou dost marvel when they mock
وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا لَا يَذْكُرُونَ (13)
Waitha thukkiroo la yathkuroona
And heed not when they are reminded ,
وَإِذَا رَأَوْا آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ (14)
Waitha raaw ayatan yastaskhiroona
And seek to scoff when they behold a portent
وَقَالُوا إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ (15)
Waqaloo in hatha illa sihrun mubeenun
And they say : lo! this is mere magic ;
أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ (16)
Aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamabAAoothoona
When we are dead and have become dust and bones , shall we then , forsooth , be raised ( again ) ?
أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ (17)
Awaabaona alawwaloona
And our forefathers?
قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَاخِرُونَ (18)
Qul naAAam waantum dakhiroona
Say ( O Muhammad ) : Yea , in truth ; and ye will be brought low .
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ (19)
Fainnama hiya zajratun wahidatun faitha hum yanthuroona
There is but one Shout , and lo! they behold
وَقَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ (20)
Waqaloo ya waylana hatha yawmu alddeeni
And say : Ah , woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment .
هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ (21)
Hatha yawmu alfasli allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona
This is the Day of Separation , which ye used to deny .
۞ احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ (22)
Ohshuroo allatheena thalamoo waazwajahum wama kanoo yaAAbudoona
( And it is said unto the angels ) : Assemble those who did wrong , together with their wives and what they used to worship
مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ (23)
Min dooni Allahi faihdoohum ila sirati aljaheemi
Instead of Allah , and lead them to the path to hell ;
وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْئُولُونَ (24)
Waqifoohum innahum masooloona
And stop them , for they must be questioned .
مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ (25)
Ma lakum la tanasaroona
What aileth you that ye help not one another?
بَلْ هُمُ الْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ (26)
Bal humu alyawma mustaslimoona
Nay , but this day they make full submission .
وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ (27)
Waaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona
And some of them draw near unto others , mutually questioning .
قَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ الْيَمِينِ (28)
Qaloo innakum kuntum tatoonana AAani alyameeni
They say : Lo! ye used to come unto us , imposing , ( swearing that ye spoke the truth ) .
قَالُوا بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ (29)
Qaloo bal lam takoonoo mumineena
They answer : Nay , but ye ( yourselves ) were not believers .
وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَانٍ ۖ بَلْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا طَاغِينَ (30)
Wama kana lana AAalaykum min sultanin bal kuntum qawman tagheena
We had no power over you , but ye were wayward folk .
فَحَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَا ۖ إِنَّا لَذَائِقُونَ (31)
Fahaqqa AAalayna qawlu rabbina inna lathaiqoona
Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us . Lo! we are about to taste ( the doom ) .
فَأَغْوَيْنَاكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَاوِينَ (32)
Faaghwaynakum inna kunna ghaweena
Thus we misled you . Lo! we were ( ourselves ) astray .
فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ (33)
Fainnahum yawmaithin fee alAAathabi mushtarikoona
Then lo! this day they ( both ) are sharers in the doom .
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ (34)
Inna kathalika nafAAalu bialmujrimeena
Lo! thus deal We with the guilty .
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ (35)
Innahum kanoo itha qeela lahum la ilaha illa Allahu yastakbiroona
For when it was said unto them , There is no god save Allah , they were scornful
وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُو آلِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍ (36)
Wayaqooloona ainna latarikoo alihatina lishaAAirin majnoonin
And said : Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?
بَلْ جَاءَ بِالْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ (37)
Bal jaa bialhaqqi wasaddaqa almursaleena
Nay , but he brought the Truth , and he confirmed those sent ( before him ) .
إِنَّكُمْ لَذَائِقُو الْعَذَابِ الْأَلِيمِ (38)
Innakum lathaiqoo alAAathabi alaleemi
Lo! ( now ) verily ye taste the painful doom
وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ (39)
Wama tujzawna illa ma kuntum taAAmaloona
Ye are requited naught save what ye did
إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ (40)
Illa AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena
Save single minded slaves of Allah ;
أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَّعْلُومٌ (41)
Olaika lahum rizqun maAAloomun
For them there is a known provision ,
فَوَاكِهُ ۖ وَهُم مُّكْرَمُونَ (42)
Fawakihu wahum mukramoona
Fruits . . And they will be honored
فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ (43)
Fee jannati alnnaAAeemi
In the Gardens of delight ,
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَابِلِينَ (44)
AAala sururin mutaqabileena
On couches facing one another
يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ (45)
Yutafu AAalayhim bikasin min maAAeenin
A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them ,
بَيْضَاءَ لَذَّةٍ لِّلشَّارِبِينَ (46)
Baydaa laththatin lilshsharibeena
White , delicious to the drinkers ,
لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ (47)
La feeha ghawlun wala hum AAanha yunzafoona
Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby .
وَعِندَهُمْ قَاصِرَاتُ الطَّرْفِ عِينٌ (48)
WaAAindahum qasiratu alttarfi AAeenun
And with them are those of modest gaze , with lovely eyes ,
كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَّكْنُونٌ (49)
Kaannahunna baydun maknoonun
( Pure ) as they were hidden eggs ( of the ostrich ) .
فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ (50)
Faaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona
And some of them draw near unto others , mutually questioning .
