ताम्रलिप्ति नगर में धनदत्त नामक एक धनवान वैश्य रहता था| अत्यंत धनी होने पर भी वह संतानहीन था| पुत्र प्राप्त करने के लिए उसने अनेक उपाय किए| अंत में अनेक विद्वान ब्राह्मणों को बुलाकर उसने इस विषय में कुछ करने के लिए उनसे आग्रह किया| ब्राह्मणों ने कहा कि ऐसा करना कोई कठिन कार्य नहीं है| इसके बाद वे एक कथा सुनाने लगे –
मालिक की सुखद वापसी
अपने प्रिय नौकर को स्टेशन पर देखकर मालिक प्रसन्न हो गया| नौकर उन्हें लेने आया था|
