37b. As-Saffat (51 to 100)
A speaker of them saith : Lo! I had a comrade, Who used to say : Art thou in truth of those who put faith , Can we , when we are dead and have become mere dust …
قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينٌ (51)
Qala qailun minhum innee kana lee qareenun
A speaker of them saith : Lo! I had a comrade
يَقُولُ أَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُصَدِّقِينَ (52)
Yaqoolu ainnaka lamina almusaddiqeena
Who used to say : Art thou in truth of those who put faith ( in his words ) ?
أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ (53)
Aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamadeenoona
Can we , when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones , can we ( then ) verily be brought to book?
قَالَ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ (54)
Qala hal antum muttaliAAoona
He saith : Will ye look?
فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَآهُ فِي سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ (55)
FaittalaAAa faraahu fee sawai aljaheemi
Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell .
قَالَ تَاللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرْدِينِ (56)
Qala taAllahi in kidta laturdeeni
He saith : By Allah , thou verily didst all but cause my ruin ,
وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنتُ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِينَ (57)
Walawla niAAmatu rabbee lakuntu mina almuhdareena
And had it not been for the favor of my Lord , I too had been of those haled forth ( to doom ) .
أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ (58)
Afama nahnu bimayyiteena
Are we then not to die
إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ (59)
Illa mawtatana aloola wama nahnu bimuAAaththabeena
Saving our former death , and are we not to he punished?
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ (60)
Inna hatha lahuwa alfawzu alAAatheemu
Lo! this is the supreme triumph .
لِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ الْعَامِلُونَ (61)
Limithli hatha falyaAAmali alAAamiloona
For the like of this , then , let the workers work .
أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّومِ (62)
Athalika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu alzzaqqoomi
Is this better as a welcome , or the tree of Zaqqam?
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّالِمِينَ (63)
Inna jaAAalnaha fitnatan lilththalimeena
Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong doers .
إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِي أَصْلِ الْجَحِيمِ (64)
Innaha shajaratun takhruju fee asli aljaheemi
Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell
طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُ رُءُوسُ الشَّيَاطِينِ (65)
TalAAuha kaannahu ruoosu alshshayateeni
Its crop is as it were the heads of devils
فَإِنَّهُمْ لَآكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ (66)
Fainnahum laakiloona minha famalioona minha albutoona
And lo! they verily must eat thereof , and fill ( their ) bellies therewith .
ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ (67)
Thumma inna lahum AAalayha lashawban min hameemin
And afterward , lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water
ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرْجِعَهُمْ لَإِلَى الْجَحِيمِ (68)
Thumma inna marjiAAahum laila aljaheemi
And afterward , lo! their return is surely unto hell .
إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا آبَاءَهُمْ ضَالِّينَ (69)
Innahum alfaw abaahum dalleena
They indeed found their fathers astray ,
فَهُمْ عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ (70)
Fahum AAala atharihim yuhraAAoona
But they make haste ( to follow ) in their footsteps .
وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ (71)
Walaqad dalla qablahum aktharu alawwaleena
And verily most of the men of old went astray before them ,
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ (72)
Walaqad arsalna feehim munthireena
And verily We sent among them warners .
فَانظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُنذَرِينَ (73)
Faonthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu almunthareena
Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned ,
إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ (74)
Illa AAibada Allahi almukhlaseena
Save singled minded slaves of Allah .
وَلَقَدْ نَادَانَا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ الْمُجِيبُونَ (75)
Walaqad nadana noohun falaniAAma almujeeboona
And Noah verily prayed unto Us , and gracious was the Hearer of his prayer
وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ (76)
Wanajjaynahu waahlahu mina alkarbi alAAatheemi
And We saved him and his household from the great distress ,
وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُ هُمُ الْبَاقِينَ (77)
WajaAAalna thurriyyatahu humu albaqeena
And made his seed the survivors ,
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الْآخِرِينَ (78)
Watarakna AAalayhi fee alakhireena
And left for him among the later folk ( the salutation ) :
سَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٍ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ (79)
Salamun AAala noohin fee alAAalameena
Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ (80)
Inna kathalika najzee almuhsineena
Lo! thus do We reward the good .
إِنَّهُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (81)
Innahu min AAibadina almumineena
Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves .
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا الْآخَرِينَ (82)
Thumma aghraqna alakhareena
Then We did drown the others .
۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِ لَإِبْرَاهِيمَ (83)
Wainna min sheeAAatihi laibraheema
And lo! of his persuasion verily was Abraham
إِذْ جَاءَ رَبَّهُ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ (84)
Ith jaa rabbahu biqalbin saleemin
When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart ;
إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ (85)
Ith qala liabeehi waqawmihi matha taAAbudoona
When he said unto his father and his folk : What is it that ye worship?
أَئِفْكًا آلِهَةً دُونَ اللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ (86)
Aifkan alihatan doona Allahi tureedoona
Is it a falsehood gods beside Allah that ye desire?
فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (87)
Fama thannukum birabbi alAAalameena
What then is your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds?
فَنَظَرَ نَظْرَةً فِي النُّجُومِ (88)
Fanathara nathratan fee alnnujoomi
And he glanced a glance at the stars
فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمٌ (89)
Faqala innee saqeemun
Then said : Lo! I feel sick!
فَتَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ مُدْبِرِينَ (90)
Fatawallaw AAanhu mudbireena
And they turned their backs and went away from him
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰ آلِهَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ (91)
Faragha ila alihatihim faqala ala takuloona
Then turned he to their gods and said : Will ye not eat?
مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنطِقُونَ (92)
Ma lakum la tantiqoona
What aileth you that ye speak not?
فَرَاغَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضَرْبًا بِالْيَمِينِ (93)
Faragha AAalayhim darban bialyameeni
Then he attacked them , striking with his right hand .
فَأَقْبَلُوا إِلَيْهِ يَزِفُّونَ (94)
Faaqbaloo ilayhi yaziffoona
And ( his people ) came toward him , hastening .
قَالَ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مَا تَنْحِتُونَ (95)
Qala ataAAbudoona ma tanhitoona
He said : Worship ye that which ye yourselves do carve
وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ (96)
WaAllahu khalaqakum wama taAAmaloona
When Allah hath created you and what ye make?
قَالُوا ابْنُوا لَهُ بُنْيَانًا فَأَلْقُوهُ فِي الْجَحِيمِ (97)
Qaloo ibnoo lahu bunyanan faalqoohu fee aljaheemi
They said : Build for him a building and fling him in the red hot fire .
فَأَرَادُوا بِهِ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَاهُمُ الْأَسْفَلِينَ (98)
Faaradoo bihi kaydan fajaAAalnahumu alasfaleena
And they designed a snare for him , but We made them the undermost .
وَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ (99)
Waqala innee thahibun ila rabbee sayahdeeni
And he said : Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me
رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ (100)
Rabbi hab lee mina alssaliheena
My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous .
