अध्याय 156
1 [वै]
एतच छरुत्वा तु कौन्तेयाः शल्यविद्धा इवाभवन
सर्वे चास्वस्थ मनसॊ बभूवुस ते महारथाः
संतोषी सदा सुखी
किसी नगर में हरिदत नामक एक ब्राह्मण परिवार सहित निवास करता था| वह मन लगाकर अपने खेत में काम करता, परंतु फिर भी उसे पर्याप्त आय नही होती थी| उसका जीवन दुख और कठिनाइयों से भरा था| एक दिन ब्राह्मण अपना कार्य समाप्त करके थोड़ा विश्राम कर रहा था कि उसने समीप के रेत के टीले पर एक भयंकर सर्प को फन फैलाए बैठे देखा| ब्राह्मण ने सोचा कि यह मेरे क्षेत्र का देवता है|

ततॊ वृक्षं मया दष्टम इमं जीवय काश्यप

कुरुवंश के देवापि बड़े और शांतनु छोटे थे| पिता के स्वर्गवास के बाद राज्याभिषेक का प्रश्न उठने पर देवापि चिंतित हो उठे| वे चर्मरोगी थे इसलिए वे शांतनु को राजा बनाना चाहते थे|
