साबरमती आश्रम के लिए जगह की तलाश में गांधीजी एक दिन वर्धा से पांच किलोमीटर ऊंची पहाड़ी पर गए। वहां एक झुग्गी बस्ती थी। गांधीजी को पता चला कि यह एक हरिजन बस्ती है। उन्होंने कहा, ‘साबरमती आश्रम के लिए यह उपयुक्त जगह है।’ जमनालाल बजाज उनके साथ थे। उन्होंने कहा, ‘लेकिन यहां बहुत गंदगी है।’ गांधी जी बोले, ‘यहां देश की आत्मा बसती है, इसलिए हरिजन बस्ती के फायदे के लिए यहां आश्रम बनाना ठीक रहेगा।’
