किसी समय में गंगा तट पर माकंदिका नाम की एक नगरी थी| वहां एक साधु रहता था, जिसने मौनव्रत धारण किया था| भिक्षा मांगना ही उसकी आजीविका का साधन था|
तूने रात गँवायी सोय के, दिवस गँवाया खाय के।
तूने रात गँवायी सोय के, दिवस गँवाया खाय के।
हीरा जनम अमोल था, कौड़ी बदले जाय॥
