Vaisampayana said, “When that foremost of Brahmanas had gone away on someother errand, the maiden began to ponder over the virtue of thosemantras.
Vaishampayana said, “King Yudhishthira, thus praised by the gods, theMaruts and the Rishis, proceeded to that place where those foremost onesof Kurus race were.
Sauti said, “Janamejaya, the son of Parikshit, was, with his brothers,attending his long sacrifice on the plains of Kurukshetra. His brotherswere three, Srutasena, Ugrasena, and Bhimasena. And as they were sittingat the sacrifice, there arrived at the spot an offspring of Sarama (thecelestial bitch). And belaboured by the brothers of Janamejaya, he ranaway to his mother, crying in pain.
“Dhritarashtra said, ‘Thou didst mention to me before the name of Pandya,that hero of world-wide celebrity, but his feats, O Sanjaya, in battlehave never been narrated by thee. Tell me today in detail of the prowessof that great hero, his skill, spirit, and energy, the measure of hismight, and his pride.’
Vaisampayana said, “Hearing these words of Yajnasena’s daughter, Arjunaonce more spoke, showing proper regard for his mighty-armed eldestbrother of unfading glory.
“Yudhishthira said, ‘I think, O grandsire, that thou art acquainted witheverything, O thou that art conversant with duties. I desire to hear theediscourse to me, O sinless one, of the ordinances about conduct.’
“Arjuna said, ‘What is the state, O Krishna, of those who abandoning theordinance of the scriptures, perform sacrifices endued with faith? It isone of Goodness, or Passion, or Darkness?’
Vaisampayana said, “And that maiden of rigid vows. O mighty monarch, byserving with a pure heart, that Brahmana of rigid vows, succeeded ingratifying him.
Vaishampayana said, “King Yudhishthira the just, the son of Pritha, hadnot stayed there for more than a moment when, O thou of Kurus race, allthe gods with Indra at their head came to that spot.
