Chapter 22
“Sanjaya said, ‘Many elephant-warriors riding on their beasts, urged bythy son, proceeded against Dhrishtadyumna, filled with rage and desirousof compassing his destruction.

“Sahadeva said, ‘By casting off all external objects only, O Bharata, onedoes not attain to success. By casting off even mental attachments, theattainment of success is doubtful.
“Bharadwaja said, ‘What has been said to be the consequence of gift? Whatof Righteousness? What of conduct? What of Penances well-performed? Whatof the study and recitation of the Vedas? And what of pouring libationsupon the fire?’
“The Holy One said, ‘They say that the Aswattha, having its roots aboveand branches below, is eternal, its leaves are the Chhandas. He whoknoweth it, knoweth the Vedas.
Vaisampayana said, “Although that noble girl addressed him in varioussweet words, yet she was unable to dissuade that deity of a thousandrays.
Janamejaya said, “Bhishma and Drona, those two high-souled persons, kingDhritarashtra, and Virata and Drupada, and Sankha and Uttara.
“The Rishis said, ‘O son of Suta, we wish to hear a full andcircumstantial account of the place mentioned by you as Samanta-panchaya.’
“Dhritarashtra said, ‘When Pandya had been slain and when that foremostof heroes, viz., Karna was employed in routing and destroying the foe,what, O Sanjaya, did Arjuna do in battle?
Vaisampayana said, “When Kunti’s son, king Yudhishthira the just,remained speechless after listening to his brothers who were tellingthese truths of the Vedas, that foremost of women, viz.,
“Bhrigu said, ‘Forest recluses seeking the acquisition of virtue go tosacred waters and rivers and springs, and undergo penances in lone andsecluded woods abounding with deer and buffaloes and boars and tigers andwild elephants.
