“Dhritarashtra said, ‘Having said all those words unto my son,Duryodhana, who is ever disobedient to my commands, when that mightybowman endued with great strength, viz.,

“Vyasa said, ‘O wise Dhritarashtra, hear what I say! I will tell theethat which is for the great good of all the Kauravas! O thou of mightyarms, it hath not pleased me that the Pandavas have gone to the forestdishonestly defeated (at dice) by Duryodhana and others!
“Sanjaya said, ‘Meanwhile Arjuna, in that battle, pierced with manyarrows by the son of Drona as also by the latter’s followers, the heroicand mighty car-warriors among the Trigartas, pierced Drona’s son inreturn with three shafts, and each of the other warriors with two.
“The sage said, ‘If, on the other hand, O Kshatriya, thou thinkest thatthou hast any prowess still, I shall discourse to thee about that line ofpolicy which thou mayst adopt for recovering thy kingdom.
“Indra said, ‘I wish to know, O Grandsire, what the end is that isattained by him who consciously steals a cow or who sells one frommotives of cupidity.”
“Bhishma said, ‘Thus addressed, O king, by that messenger, king Drupada,like a thief caught (in the act), could not speak. He exerted himselfgreatly, by sending sweet-speeched emissaries with his own instruction tothem, saying,–This is not so,–in order to pacify his brother.
“Dhritarashtra said, “When the invincible Drona, of immeasurable energy,unable to bear (the slaughter of Jayadratha), Wrathfully entered into themidst of the Srinjayas, what did all of you think?
“Vaisampayana said, ‘Hearing that Vidura had returned, and that the kinghad consoled him, the evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra began to burn ingrief.
“Sanjaya said, ‘When king Yudhishthira the just was thus afflicted by theruler of Madras, Satyaki and Bhimasena and the two sons of Madri byPandu, encompassing Shalya with their cars, began to afflict him in thatbattle.
“The king said, ‘I do not desire, O Brahmana, to support life by deceitor fraud. I do not desire wealth, however great, which is to be earned byunrighteous means.
