90. Al-Balad (1 to 20)

I swear by this city, Makkah -, And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -, And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],…

90.1

1 ‏لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ‎
la’ʔ ‘ʔuqsimu bihaða’ ‘lbaladi

I swear by this city, Makkah -

90.2

2 ‏وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ‎
wa’ʔanta ḥil:unm bihaða’ ‘lbaladi

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -

90.3

3 ‏وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ ‎
wawa’lidinm wama’ walada

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

90.4

4 ‏لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ‎
laqad xalaqna’ ‘l’ʔinsana fiy kabadin

We have certainly created man into hardship.

90.5

5 ‏أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ ‎
‘ʔayaḥsabu ‘ʔan l:an yaqdira ʕalayhi ‘ʔaḥadunm

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

90.6

6 ‏يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا ‎
yaquwlu ‘ʔahlaktu ma’lanm’ l:ubadan’

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

90.7

7 ‏أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ‎
‘ʔayaḥsabu ‘ʔan l:am yarahuwʔ ‘ʔaḥadun

Does he think that no one has seen him?

90.8

8 ‏أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ‎
‘ʔalam najʕal l:ahuw ʕaynayni

Have We not made for him two eyes?

90.9

9 ‏وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ‎
walisa’nanm’ waʃafatayni

And a tongue and two lips?

90.10

10 ‏وَهَدَيْنَهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ‎
wahadaynahu ‘ln:ajdayni

And have shown him the two ways?

90.11

11 ‏فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ‎
fala’ ‘qtaḥama ‘lʕaqabata

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.

90.12

12 ‏وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ‎
wama’ʔ ‘ʔadray’ka ma’ ‘lʕaqabatu

And what can make you know what is [breaking 
through] the difficult pass?

90.13

13 ‏فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ‎
fak:u raqabatin

It is the freeing of a slave

90.14

14 ‏أَوْ إِطْعَمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ ‎
‘ʔaw ‘ʔiṭʕamunm fiy yawminm ðiy masɣabatinm

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

90.15

15 ‏يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ‎
yatiymanm’ ða’ maqrabatin

An orphan of near relationship

90.16

16 ‏أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ ‎
‘ʔaw miskiynanm’ ða’ matrabatinm

Or a needy person in misery

90.17

17 ‏ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ‎
èum:a ka’na mina ‘l:aًiyna ʔa’manuw’ watawa’ṣaw’ bi’lṣ:abri watawa’ṣaw’ bi’lmarḥamati

And then being among those who believed and advised 
one another to patience and advised one another to 
compassion.

90.18

18 ‏أُو۟لَٓئِكَ أَصْحَبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ‎
‘ʔuwlaʔyʔika ‘ʔaṣḥabu ‘lmaymanati

Those are the companions of the right.

90.19

19 ‏وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ‎
wa’l:aًiyna kafaruw’ biʔa’yatina’ hum ‘ʔaṣḥabu ‘lmaʃʔamati

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the 
companions of the left.

90.20

20 ‏عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ‎
ʕalayhim na’runm m:uwʔṣadatunm

Over them will be fire closed in.
