81. At-Takwir (1 to 29)

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness], And when the stars fall, dispersing, And when the mountains are removed, And when full-term she-camels are neglected…

81.1

1 ‏إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ‎
‘ʔiða’ ‘lʃ:amsu kuw:irat

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

81.2

2 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘ln:ujuwmu ‘nkadarat

And when the stars fall, dispersing,

81.3

3 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘ljiba’lu suy:irat

And when the mountains are removed

81.4

4 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘lʕiʃa’ru ʕuṭ:ilat

And when full-term she-camels are neglected

81.5

5 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘lwuḥuwʃu ḥuʃirat

And when the wild beasts are gathered

81.6

6 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘lbiḥa’ru suj:irat

And when the seas are filled with flame

81.7

7 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘ln:ufuwsu zuw:ijat

And when the souls are paired

81.8

8 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘lmawʔuwdatu suyʔilat

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

81.9

9 ‏بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍۢ قُتِلَتْ ‎
bi’ʔay:i ðanmbinm qutilat

For what sin she was killed

81.10

10 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘lṣ:uḥufu nuʃirat

And when the pages are made public

81.11

11 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘ls:ama’ʔʔu kuʃiṭat

And when the sky is stripped away

81.12

12 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘ljaḥiymu suʕ:irat

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

81.13

13 ‏وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ ‎
wa’ʔiða’ ‘ljan:atu ‘ʔuzlifat

And when Paradise is brought near,

81.14

14 ‏عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌۭ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ ‎
ʕalimat nafsunm m:a’ʔ ‘ʔaḥḍarat

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

81.15

15 ‏فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ ‎
fala’ʔ ‘ʔuqsimu bi’lxun:asi

So I swear by the retreating stars -

81.16

16 ‏ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ ‎
‘ljawa’ri ‘lkun:asi

Those that run [their courses] and disappear -

81.17

17 ‏وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ ‎
wa’l:ayli ‘ʔiða’ ʕasʕasa

And by the night as it closes in

81.18

18 ‏وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ‎
wa’lṣ:ubḥi ‘ʔiða’ tanaf:asa

And by the dawn when it breathes

81.19

19 ‏إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ ‎
‘ʔin:ahuw laqawlu rasuwlinm kariyminm

[That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a 
noble messenger

81.20

20 ‏ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍۢ ‎
ðiy quw:atin ʕinda ðiy ‘lʕarʃi makiyninm

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the 
Throne, secure [in position],

81.21

21 ‏مُّطَاعٍۢ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍۢ ‎
m:uṭa’ʕinm èam:a ‘ʔamiyninm

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

81.22

22 ‏وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍۢ ‎
wama’ ṣa’ḥibukum bimajnuwninm

And your companion is not [at all] mad.

81.23

23 ‏وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ ‎
walaqad raʔa’hu bi’l’ʔufuqi ‘lmubiyni

And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon.

81.24

24 ‏وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍۢ ‎
wama’ huwa ʕalay ‘lɣaybi biḍaniyninm

And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] 
the unseen.

81.25

25 ‏وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَنٍۢ رَّجِيمٍۢ ‎
wama’ huwa biqawli ʃayṭaninm r:ajiyminm

And the Qur'an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from
the heavens].

81.26

26 ‏فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ ‎
fa’ʔayna taًhabuwna

So where are you going?

81.27

27 ‏إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَلَمِينَ ‎
‘ʔin huwa ‘ʔil:a’ ًikrunm l:ilʕalamiyna

It is not except a reminder to the worlds

81.28

28 ‏لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ ‎
liman ʃa’ʔʔa minkum ‘ʔan yastaqiyma

For whoever wills among you to take a right course.

81.29

29 ‏وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَلَمِينَ ‎
wama’ taʃa’ʔʔuwna ‘ʔil:a’ʔ ‘ʔan yaʃa’ʔʔa ‘ll:ahu rab:u ‘lʕalamiyna

And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the 
worlds.
