78. An-Naba (1 to 40)
About what are they asking one another?, About the great news -, That over which they are in disagreement., No! They are going to know…
1 عَم يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
ʕam yatasa’ʔʔaluwna
About what are they asking one another?
2 عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
ʕani ‘ln:aba’ʔi ‘lʕaẓiymi
About the great news -
3 ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ
‘l:aðiy hum fiyhi muxtalifuwna
That over which they are in disagreement.
4 كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
kal:a’ sayaʕlamuwna
No! They are going to know.
5 ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
èum:a kal:a’ sayaʕlamuwna
Then, no! They are going to know.
6 أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَدًۭا
‘ʔalam najʕali ‘l’ʔarḍa mihadanm’
Have We not made the earth a resting place?
7 وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًۭا
wa’ljiba’la ‘ʔawta’danm’
And the mountains as stakes?
8 وَخَلَقْنَكُمْ أَزْوَجًۭا
waxalaqnakum ‘ʔazwajanm’
And We created you in pairs
9 وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًۭا
wajaʕalna’ nawmakum suba’tanm’
And made your sleep [a means for] rest
10 وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًۭا
wajaʕalna’ ‘l:ayla liba’sanm’
And made the night as clothing
11 وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًۭا
wajaʕalna’ ‘ln:aha’ra maʕa’ʃanm’
And made the day for livelihood
12 وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًۭا شِدَادًۭا
wabanayna’ fawqakum sabʕanm’ ʃida’danm’
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens]
13 وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًۭا وَهَّاجًۭا
wajaʕalna’ sira’janm’ wah:a’janm’
And made [therein] a burning lamp
14 وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَتِ مَآءًۭ ثَجَّاجًۭا
wa’ʔanzalna’ mina ‘lmuʕṣirati ma’ʔʔanm èaj:a’janm’
And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water
15 لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّۭا وَنَبَاتًۭا
l:inuxrija bihiy ḥab:anm’ wanaba’tanm’
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation
16 وَجَنَّتٍ أَلْفَافًا
wajan:atin ‘ʔalfa’fan’
And gardens of entwined growth.
17 إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَتًۭا
‘ʔin:a yawma ‘lfaṣli ka’na miyqatanm’
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -
18 يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًۭا
yawma yunfaxu fiy ‘lṣ:uwri fata’ʔtuwna ‘ʔafwa’janm’
The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes
19 وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَبًۭا
wafutiḥati ‘ls:ama’ʔʔu faka’nat ‘ʔabwabanm’
And the heaven is opened and will become gateways
20 وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا
wasuy:irati ‘ljiba’lu faka’nat sara’ban’
And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.
21 إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًۭا
‘ʔin:a jahan:ama ka’nat mirṣa’danm’
Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait
22 لِّلطَّغِينَ مَـَٔابًۭا
l:ilṭ:aɣiyna maʔa’banm’
For the transgressors, a place of return,
23 لَّبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًۭا
l:abièiyna fiyha’ʔ ‘ʔaḥqa’banm’
In which they will remain for ages [unending].
24 لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًۭا وَلَا شَرَابًا
l:a’ yaًuwquwna fiyha’ bardanm’ wala’ ʃara’ban’
They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink
25 إِلَّا حَمِيمًۭا وَغَسَّاقًۭا
‘ʔil:a’ ḥamiymanm’ waɣas:a’qanm’
Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -
26 جَزَآءًۭ وِفَاقًا
jaza’ʔʔanm wifa’qan’
An appropriate recompense.
27 إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًۭا
‘ʔin:ahum ka’nuw’ la’ yarjuwna ḥisa’banm’
Indeed, they were not expecting an account
28 وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَتِنَا كِذَّابًۭا
wakaً:abuw’ biʔa’yatina’ kiً:a’banm’
And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.
29 وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَهُ كِتَبًۭا
wakul:a ʃayʔin ‘ʔaḥṣaynahu kitabanm’
But all things We have enumerated in writing.
30 فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا
faًuwquw’ falan n:aziydakum ‘ʔil:a’ ʕaًa’ban’
"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."
31 إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا
‘ʔin:a lilmut:aqiyna mafa’zan’
Indeed, for the righteous is attainment -
32 حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَبًۭا
ḥada’ʔyʔiqa wa’ʔaʕnabanm’
Gardens and grapevines
33 وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًۭا
wakawa’ʕiba ‘ʔatra’banm’
And full-breasted [companions] of equal age
34 وَكَأْسًۭا دِهَاقًۭا
waka’ʔsanm’ diha’qanm’
And a full cup.
35 لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا كِذَّبًۭا
l:a’ yasmaʕuwna fiyha’ laɣwanm’ wala’ kiً:abanm’
No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -
36 جَزَآءًۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًۭا
jaza’ʔʔanm m:in r:ab:ika ʕaṭa’ʔʔan ḥisa’banm’
[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,
37 رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَوَتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًۭا
r:ab:i ‘ls:amawati wa’l’ʔarḍi wama’ baynahuma’ ‘lr:aḥmani sl’ la’ yamlikuwna minhu xiṭa’banm’
[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.
38 يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَٓئِكَةُ صَفًّۭا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًۭا
yawma yaquwmu ‘lr:uwḥu wa’lmalaʔyʔikatu ṣaf:anm’ sl’ l:a’ yatakal:amuwna ‘ʔil:a’ man ‘ʔaًina lahu ‘lr:aḥmanu waqa’la ṣawa’banm’
The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.
39 ذَلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا
ًalika ‘lyawmu ‘lḥaq:u sl’ faman ʃa’ʔʔa ‘t:axaًa ‘ʔilay’ rab:ihiy maʔa’ban’
That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.
40 إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَكُمْ عَذَابًۭا قَرِيبًۭا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَبًۢا
‘ʔin:a’ʔ ‘ʔanًarnakum ʕaًa’banm’ qariybanm’ yawma yanẓuru ‘lmarʔu ma’ qad:amat yada’hu wayaquwlu ‘lka’firu yalaytaniy kuntu turabanm’
Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"
