72. Al-Jinn (1 to 28)
Say, [O Muhammad], “It has been revealed to me that a
group of the jinn listened and said, ‘Indeed, we have heard …
1 قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًۭا
qul ‘ʔuwḥiya ‘ʔilay:a ‘ʔan:ahu ‘stamaʕa nafarunm m:ina ‘ljin:i faqa’luwʔ’ ‘ʔin:a’ samiʕna’ qurʔa’nan’ ʕajabanm’
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an.
2 يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًۭا
yahdiyʔ ‘ʔilay ‘lr:uʃdi faʔa’man:a’ bihiy sl’ walan n:uʃrika birab:ina’ʔ ‘ʔaḥadanm’
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
3 وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَحِبَةًۭ وَلَا وَلَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:ahuw taʕalay’ jad:u rab:ina’ ma’ ‘t:axaða ṣaḥibatanm wala’ waladanm’
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
4 وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطًۭا
wa’ʔan:ahuw ka’na yaquwlu safiyhuna’ ʕalay ‘ll:ahi ʃaṭaṭanm’
And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression.
5 وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ ẓanan:a’ʔ ‘ʔan l:an taquwla ‘l’ʔinsu wa’ljin:u ʕalay ‘ll:ahi kaðibanm’
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allah a lie.
6 وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًۭا
wa’ʔan:ahuw ka’na rija’lunm m:ina ‘l’ʔinsi yaʕuwðuwna birija’linm m:ina ‘ljin:i faza’duwhum rahaqanm’
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden.
7 وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:ahum ẓan:uw’ kama’ ẓanantum ‘ʔan l:an yabʕaèa ‘ll:ahu ‘ʔaḥadanm’
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a messenger].
8 وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًۭا شَدِيدًۭا وَشُهُبًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ lamasna’ ‘ls:ama’ʔʔa fawajadnaha’ muliyʔat ḥarasanm’ ʃadiydanm’ waʃuhubanm’
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.
9 وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ ٱلْءَانَ يَجِدْ لَهُۥ شِهَابًۭا رَّصَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ kun:a’ naqʕudu minha’ maqaʕida lils:amʕi sl’ faman yastamiʕi ‘lʔa’na yajid lahuw ʃiha’banm’ r:aṣadanm’
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
10 وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ la’ nadriyʔ ‘ʔaʃar:un ‘ʔuriyda biman fiy ‘l’ʔarḍi ‘ʔam ‘ʔara’da bihim rab:uhum raʃadanm’
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.
11 وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ min:a’ ‘lṣ:aliḥuwna wamin:a’ duwna ًalika sl’ kun:a’ ṭara’ʔyʔiqa qidadanm’
And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.
12 وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُۥ هَرَبًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ ẓanan:a’ʔ ‘ʔan l:an n:uʕjiza ‘ll:aha fiy ‘l’ʔarḍi walan n:uʕjizahuw harabanm’
And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.
13 وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ فَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًۭا وَلَا رَهَقًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ lam:a’ samiʕna’ ‘lhuday’ʔ ʔa’man:a’ bihiy sl’ faman yuwʔminm birab:ihiy fala’ yaxa’fu baxsanm’ wala’ rahaqanm’
And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.
14 وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلْقَسِطُونَ ۖ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُو۟لَٓئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا۟ رَشَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:a’ min:a’ ‘lmuslimuwna wamin:a’ ‘lqasiṭuwna sl’ faman ‘ʔaslama fa’ʔuwlaʔyʔika taḥar:aw’ raʃadanm’
And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah ], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.
15 وَأَمَّا ٱلْقَسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا۟ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًۭا
wa’ʔam:a’ ‘lqasiṭuwna faka’nuw’ lijahan:ama ḥaṭabanm’
But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'
16 وَأَلَّوِ ٱسْتَقَمُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَهُم مَّآءً غَدَقًۭا
wa’ʔal:awi ‘staqamuw’ ʕalay ‘lṭ:ariyqati la’ʔasqaynahum m:a’ʔʔan ɣadaqanm’
And [ Allah revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant provision
17 لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًۭا صَعَدًۭا
l:inaftinahum fiyhi j waman yuʕriḍ ʕan ًikri rab:ihiy yaslukhu ʕaًa’banm’ ṣaʕadanm’
So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment.
18 وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:a ‘lmasajida lil:ahi fala’ tadʕuw’ maʕa ‘ll:ahi ‘ʔaḥadanm’
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah , so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
19 وَأَنَّهُۥ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا۟ يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًۭا
wa’ʔan:ahuw lam:a’ qa’ma ʕabdu ‘ll:ahi yadʕuwhu ka’duw’ yakuwnuwna ʕalayhi libadanm’
And that when the Servant of Allah stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."
20 قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَدْعُوا۟ رَبِّى وَلَآ أُشْرِكُ بِهِۦٓ أَحَدًۭا
qul ‘ʔin:ama’ʔ ‘ʔadʕuw’ rab:iy wala’ʔ ‘ʔuʃriku bihiyʔ ‘ʔaḥadanm’
Say, [O Muhammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."
21 قُلْ إِنِّى لَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّۭا وَلَا رَشَدًۭا
qul ‘ʔin:iy la’ʔ ‘ʔamliku lakum ḍar:anm’ wala’ raʃadanm’
Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."
22 قُلْ إِنِّى لَن يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدٌۭ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا
qul ‘ʔin:iy lan yujiyraniy mina ‘ll:ahi ‘ʔaḥadunm walan ‘ʔajida min duwnihiy multaḥadan’
Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allah anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.
23 إِلَّا بَلَغًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِسَلَتِهِۦ ۚ وَمَن يَعْصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا
‘ʔil:a’ balaɣanm’ m:ina ‘ll:ahi warisalatihiy j waman yaʕṣi ‘ll:aha warasuwlahuw fa’ʔin:a lahuw na’ra jahan:ama xalidiyna fiyha’ʔ ‘ʔabadan’
But [I have for you] only notification from Allah , and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.
24 حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًۭا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًۭا
ḥat:ay’ʔ ‘ʔiًa’ ra’ʔaw’ ma’ yuwʕaduwna fasayaʕlamuwna man ‘ʔaḍʕafu na’ṣiranm’ wa’ʔaqal:u ʕadadanm’
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.
25 قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌۭ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَمَدًا
qul ‘ʔin ‘ʔadriyʔ ‘ʔaqariybunm m:a’ tuwʕaduwna ‘ʔam yajʕalu lahuw rab:iyʔ ‘ʔamadan’
Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."
26 عَلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا
ʕalimu ‘lɣaybi fala’ yuẓhiru ʕalay’ ɣaybihiyʔ ‘ʔaḥadan’
[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone
27 إِلَّا مَنِ ٱرْتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولٍۢ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَسْلُكُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِۦ رَصَدًۭا
‘ʔil:a’ mani ‘rtaḍay’ min r:asuwlinm fa’ʔin:ahuw yasluku minm bayni yadayhi wamin xalfihiy raṣadanm’
Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before each messenger and behind him observers
28 لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَلَتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢا
l:iyaʕlama ‘ʔan qad ‘ʔablaɣuw’ risalati rab:ihim wa’ʔaḥa’ṭa bima’ ladayhim wa’ʔaḥṣay’ kul:a ʃayʔin ʕadadanm’
That he may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.
