68. Al-Qalam (1 to 52)
Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted…
nʔ j wa’lqalami wama’ yasṭuruwna
Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe,
ma’ʔ ‘ʔanta biniʕmati rab:ika bimajnuwninm
You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.
wa’ʔin:a laka la’ʔajran’ ɣayra mamnuwninm
And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.
wa’ʔin:aka laʕalay’ xuluqin ʕaẓiyminm
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
fasatubṣiru wayubṣiruwna
So you will see and they will see
bi’ʔayy:ikumu ‘lmaftuwnu
Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].
‘ʔin:a rab:aka huwa ‘ʔaʕlamu biman ḍal:a ʕan sabiylihiy wahuwa ‘ʔaʕlamu bi’lmuhtadiyna
Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
fala’ tuṭiʕi ‘lmukað:ibiyna
Then do not obey the deniers.
wad:uw’ law tudhinu fayudhinuwna
They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].
wala’ tuṭiʕ kul:a ḥal:a’finm m:ahiynin
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
ham:a’zinm m:aʃ:a’ʔʔinm binamiyminm
[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -
m:an:a’ʕinm l:ilxayri muʕtadin ‘ʔaèiymin
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
ʕutul:inm baʕda ًalika zaniymin
Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.
‘ʔan ka’na ًa’ ma’linm wabaniyna
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,
‘ʔiًa’ tutlay’ ʕalayhi ʔa’yatuna’ qa’la ‘ʔasaṭiyru ‘l’ʔaw:aliyna
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
sanasimuhuw ʕalay ‘lxurṭuwmi
We will brand him upon the snout.
‘ʔin:a’ balawnahum kama’ balawna’ʔ ‘ʔaṣḥaba ‘ljan:ati ‘ʔiً ‘ʔaqsamuw’ layaṣrimun:aha’ muṣbiḥiyna
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
wala’ yastaènuwna
Without making exception.
faṭa’fa ʕalayha’ ṭa’ʔyʔifunm m:in r:ab:ika wahum na’ʔyʔimuwna
So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.
fa’ʔaṣbaḥat ka’lṣ:ariymi
And it became as though reaped.
fatana’daw’ muṣbiḥiyna
And they called one another at morning,
‘ʔani ‘ɣduw’ ʕalay’ ḥarèikum ‘ʔin kuntum ṣarimiyna
[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."
fa’nṭalaquw’ wahum yataxafatuwna
So they set out, while lowering their voices,
‘ʔan l:a’ yadxulan:aha’ ‘lyawma ʕalaykum m:iskiynunm
[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."
waɣadaw’ ʕalay’ ḥardinm qadiriyna
And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.
falam:a’ ra’ʔawha’ qa’luwʔ’ ‘ʔin:a’ laḍa’ʔl:uwna
But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;
bal naḥnu maḥruwmuwna
Rather, we have been deprived."
qa’la ‘ʔawsaṭuhum ‘ʔalam ‘ʔaqul l:akum lawla’ tusab:iḥuwna
The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [ Allah ]?' "
qa’luw’ subḥana rab:ina’ʔ ‘ʔin:a’ kun:a’ ẓalimiyna
They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
fa’ʔaqbala baʕḍuhum ʕalay’ baʕḍinm yatalawamuwna
Then they approached one another, blaming each other.
qa’luw’ yawaylana’ʔ ‘ʔin:a’ kun:a’ ṭaɣiyna
They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.
ʕasay’ rab:una’ʔ ‘ʔan yubdilana’ xayranm’ m:inha’ʔ ‘ʔin:a’ʔ ‘ʔilay’ rab:ina’ raɣibuwna
Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."
kaًalika ‘lʕaًa’bu sl’ walaʕaًa’bu ‘lʔa’xirati ‘ʔakbaru j law ka’nuw’ yaʕlamuwna
Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.
‘ʔin:a lilmut:aqiyna ʕinda rab:ihim jan:ati ‘ln:aʕiymi
Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.
‘ʔafanajʕalu ‘lmuslimiyna ka’lmujrimiyna
Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?
ma’ lakum kayfa taḥkumuwna
What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?
‘ʔam lakum kitabunm fiyhi tadrusuwna
Or do you have a scripture in which you learn
‘ʔin:a lakum fiyhi lama’ taxay:aruwna
That indeed for you is whatever you choose?
‘ʔam lakum ‘ʔaymanun ʕalayna’ baliɣatun ‘ʔilay’ yawmi ‘lqiyamati l’ ‘ʔin:a lakum lama’ taḥkumuwna
Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?
salhum ‘ʔay:uhum biًalika zaʕiymun
Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.
‘ʔam lahum ʃuraka’ʔʔu falya’ʔtuw’ biʃuraka’ʔyʔihim ‘ʔin ka’nuw’ ṣadiqiyna
Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.
yawma yukʃafu ʕan sa’qinm wayudʕawna ‘ʔilay ‘ls:ujuwdi fala’ yastaṭiyʕuwna
The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able,
xaʃiʕatan ‘ʔabṣaruhum tarhaquhum ًil:atunm sl’ waqad ka’nuw’ yudʕawna ‘ʔilay ‘ls:ujuwdi wahum salimuwna
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.
faًarniy waman yukaً:ibu bihaًa’ ‘lḥadiyèi sl’ sanastadrijuhum m:in ḥayèu la’ yaʕlamuwna
So leave Me, [O Muhammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.
wa’ʔumliy lahum j ‘ʔin:a kaydiy matiynun
And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.
‘ʔam tasʔaluhum ‘ʔajranm’ fahum m:in m:aɣraminm m:uèqaluwna
Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?
‘ʔam ʕindahumu ‘lɣaybu fahum yaktubuwna
Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
fa’ṣbir liḥukmi rab:ika wala’ takun kaṣa’ḥibi ‘lḥuwti ‘ʔiً na’day’ wahuwa makẓuwmunm
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed.
l:awla’ʔ ‘ʔan tadarakahuw niʕmatunm m:in r:ab:ihiy lanubiًa bi’lʕara’ʔʔi wahuwa maًmuwmunm
If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.
fa’jtabahu rab:uhuw fajaʕalahuw mina ‘lṣ:aliḥiyna
And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
wa’ʔin yaka’du ‘l:aًiyna kafaruw’ layuzliquwnaka bi’ʔabṣarihim lam:a’ samiʕuw’ ‘lً:ikra wayaquwluwna ‘ʔin:ahuw lamajnuwnunm
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
wama’ huwa ‘ʔil:a’ ًikrunm l:ilʕalamiyna
But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
