74a. Al-Muddaththir (1 to 50)
Arise and warnO you who covers himself [with a garment], Arise and warn, And your Lord glorify…
1 يَٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ
yaʔ’ʔay:uha’ ‘lmud:aè:iru
O you who covers himself [with a garment],
2 قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
qum fa’ʔanًir
Arise and warn
3 وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
warab:aka fakab:ir
And your Lord glorify
4 وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
waèiya’baka faṭah:ir
And your clothing purify
5 وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ
wa’lr:ujza fa’hjur
And uncleanliness avoid
6 وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
wala’ tamnun tastakèiru
And do not confer favor to acquire more
7 وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ
walirab:ika fa’ṣbir
But for your Lord be patient.
8 فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ
fa’ʔiًa’ nuqira fiy ‘ln:a’quwri
And when the trumpet is blown,
9 فَذَلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ
faًalika yawmayʔiًinm yawmun ʕasiyrun
That Day will be a difficult day
10 عَلَى ٱلْكَفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍۢ
ʕalay ‘lkafiriyna ɣayru yasiyrinm
For the disbelievers - not easy.
11 ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًۭا
ًarniy waman xalaqtu waḥiydanm’
Leave Me with the one I created alone
12 وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًۭا مَّمْدُودًۭا
wajaʕaltu lahuw ma’lanm’ m:amduwdanm’
And to whom I granted extensive wealth
13 وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًۭا
wabaniyna ʃuhuwdanm’
And children present [with him]
14 وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًۭا
wamah:adt:u lahuw tamhiydanm’
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].
15 ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ
èum:a yaṭmaʕu ‘ʔan ‘ʔaziyda
Then he desires that I should add more.
16 كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَتِنَا عَنِيدًۭا
kal:a’ʔ sl’ ‘ʔin:ahuw ka’na liʔa’yatina’ ʕaniydanm’
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.
17 سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
sa’ʔurhiquhuw ṣaʕuwdan’
I will cover him with arduous torment.
18 إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
‘ʔin:ahuw fak:ara waqad:ara
Indeed, he thought and deliberated.
19 فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
faqutila kayfa qad:ara
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
20 ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
èum:a qutila kayfa qad:ara
Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
21 ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
èum:a naẓara
Then he considered [again];
22 ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
èum:a ʕabasa wabasara
Then he frowned and scowled;
23 ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
èum:a ‘ʔadbara wa’stakbara
Then he turned back and was arrogant
24 فَقَالَ إِنْ هَذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ
faqa’la ‘ʔin haًa’ʔ ‘ʔil:a’ siḥrunm yuwʔèaru
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
25 إِنْ هَذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ
‘ʔin haًa’ʔ ‘ʔil:a’ qawlu ‘lbaʃari
This is not but the word of a human being."
26 سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
sa’ʔuṣliyhi saqara
I will drive him into Saqar.
27 وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
wama’ʔ ‘ʔadray’ka ma’ saqaru
And what can make you know what is Saqar?
28 لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ
la’ tubqiy wala’ taًaru
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],
29 لَوَّاحَةٌۭ لِّلْبَشَرِ
law:a’ḥatunm l:ilbaʃari
Blackening the skins.
30 عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
ʕalayha’ tisʕata ʕaʃara
Over it are nineteen [angels].
31 وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٓئِكَةًۭ ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَنًۭا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْكَفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَذَا مَثَلًۭا ۚ كَذَلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
wama’ jaʕalna’ʔ ‘ʔaṣḥaba ‘ln:a’ri ‘ʔil:a’ malaʔyʔikatanm l’ wama’ jaʕalna’ ʕid:atahum ‘ʔil:a’ fitnatanm l:il:aًiyna kafaruw’ liyastayqina ‘l:aًiyna ‘ʔuwtuw’ ‘lkitaba wayazda’da ‘l:aًiyna ʔa’manuwʔ’ ‘ʔiymananm’ l’ wala’ yarta’ba ‘l:aًiyna ‘ʔuwtuw’ ‘lkitaba wa’lmuwʔminuwna l’ waliyaquwla ‘l:aًiyna fiy quluwbihim m:araḍunm wa’lkafiruwna ma’ًa’ʔ ‘ʔara’da ‘ll:ahu bihaًa’ maèalanm’ j kaًalika yuḍil:u ‘ll:ahu man yaʃa’ʔʔu wayahdiy man yaʃa’ʔʔu j wama’ yaʕlamu junuwda rab:ika ‘ʔil:a’ huwa j wama’ hiya ‘ʔil:a’ ًikray’ lilbaʃari
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.
32 كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ
kal:a’ wa’lqamari
No! By the moon
33 وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ
wa’l:ayli ‘ʔiً ‘ʔadbara
And [by] the night when it departs
34 وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ
wa’lṣ:ubḥi ‘ʔiًa’ʔ ‘ʔasfara
And [by] the morning when it brightens,
35 إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ
‘ʔin:aha’ la’ʔiḥday ‘lkubari
Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]
36 نَذِيرًۭا لِّلْبَشَرِ
naًiyranm’ l:ilbaʃari
As a warning to humanity -
37 لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
liman ʃa’ʔʔa minkum ‘ʔan yataqad:ama ‘ʔaw yata’ʔax:ara
To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.
38 كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
kul:u nafsinm bima’ kasabat rahiynatun
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained
39 إِلَّآ أَصْحَبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ
‘ʔil:a’ʔ ‘ʔaṣḥaba ‘lyamiyni
Except the companions of the right,
40 فِى جَنَّتٍۢ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
fiy jan:atinm yatasa’ʔʔaluwna
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
41 عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
ʕani ‘lmujrimiyna
About the criminals,
42 مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ
ma’ salakakum fiy saqara
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"
43 قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
qa’luw’ lam naku mina ‘lmuṣal:iyna
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
44 وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ
walam naku nuṭʕimu ‘lmiskiyna
Nor did we used to feed the poor.
45 وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ
wakun:a’ naxuwḍu maʕa ‘lxa’ʔyʔiḍiyna
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],
46 وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
wakun:a’ nukaً:ibu biyawmi ‘ld:iyni
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
47 حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ
ḥat:ay’ʔ ‘ʔatay’na’ ‘lyaqiynu
Until there came to us the certainty."
48 فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَعَةُ ٱلشَّفِعِينَ
fama’ tanfaʕuhum ʃafaʕatu ‘lʃ:afiʕiyna
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.
49 فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
fama’ lahum ʕani ‘lt:aًkirati muʕriḍiyna
Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away
50 كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌۭ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ
ka’ʔan:ahum ḥumurunm m:ustanfiratunm
As if they were alarmed donkeys
