मन्त्राय समुपानीतैर धृतराष्ट्र हितैर नृप
धर्म्यं पथ्यं यशस्यं च वाच्यम इत्य अनुशुश्रुमः
जले रक्षतु वाराहः स्थले रक्षतु वामनः ।
अटव्यां नारसिंहश्च सर्वतः पातु केशवः ।।

अव्याहरति कौन्तेये धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे
भरातॄणां बरुवतां तांस तान विविधान वेद निश्चयान
1 राम उवाच
परत्यक्षम एतल लॊकानां सर्वेषाम एव भामिनि
यथा मया परं शक्त्या कृतं वै पौरुषं महत
“Vaisampayana said ‘Then Vaka, huge as a mountain, thus broken (onBhima’s knee), died, uttering frightful yells. Terrified by these sounds,the relatives of that Rakshasa came out, O king, with their attendants.Bhima, that foremost of smiters, seeing them so terrified and deprived ofreason, comforted them and made them promise (to give up cannibalism),saying, ‘Do not ever again kill human beings.
समुद्र तट के किसी नगर में एक धनवान वैश्य के पुत्रों ने एक कौआ पाल रखा था| वे उस कौए को बराबर अपने भोजन से बचा अन्न देते थे| उनकी जूँठन खाने वाला वह कौआ स्वादिष्ट तथा पुष्टिकर भोजन खाकर खूब मोटा हो गया था| इससे उसका अहंकार बहुत बढ़ गया| वह अपने से श्रेष्ठ पक्षियों को भी तुच्छ समझने और उनका अपमान करने लगा|

संध्या का समय था| सूर्य अस्त हो चुका था| ब्राह्मण कुमारों के वेश में पांडव द्रौपदी को साथ लिए हुए अपनी मां के पास गए| कुंती कुम्हार के घर में, कमरे का दरवाजा बंद करके भीतर बैठी हुई थी|
Vaisampayana said, “O king, then those foremost of bowmen, ofimmeasurable prowess, holding bows stringed at full stretch and equippedwith quivers and arrows and wearing finger-caps made of the guana-skin,and with their swords on, proceeded with Panchali towards theGandhamadana, taking with them the best of Brahmanas.
