“Yudhishthira said, ‘It behoves thee, O foremost one of Kuru’s race, totell me unto what kind of Brahmanas, O grandsire, should the offers madeat Sraddhas be given away.’

“Bhishma said, ‘Issuing out of the city, Amva reflected sorrowfully inthis strain. ‘There is not in the whole world a young woman in such amiserable plight as I! Alas, destitute of friends, I am rejected by Salwaalso!
“Sanjaya said, ‘Then Karna, O king, piercing Bhima with three arrows,poured countless beautiful arrows upon him.
Vaisampayana continued, “After the chief of the Dasharhas had departed,the heroic Yudhishthira, and Bhima, and Arjuna, and the twins, eachlooking like unto Shiva, and Krishna, and their priest, ascending costlycars unto which were yoked excellent steeds, together went into theforest.
“Sanjaya said, ‘After this, the followers of Subala’s son, O monarch,became filled with rage. Prepared to lay down their lives in thatdreadful battle, they began to resist the Pandavas.
“Bhishma said, ‘That foremost of all persons conversant with the Vedas,viz., Utathya of Angirasa’s race, discoursed cheerfully (on formeroccasion) unto Yuvanaswa’s son Mandhatri. I shall now, O Yudhishthira,recite to thee everything that Utathya, that foremost of all personsconversant with the Vedas, had said unto that king.’
“Bhishma continued, ‘Listen to me, O Yudhishthira, as I tell thee whatthose optional Sraddhas are that should be performed under the differentconstellations and that were first spoken of by Yama unto kingSasavindu.
“Dhritarashtra said, ‘Day by day, O Sanjaya, my blazing fame is beingdarkened. A great many warriors of mine have fallen. I think, all this isdue to the reverse brought about by time.
“Vasudeva continued, ‘Then O thou foremost of the Bharata race, taking upmy beautiful bow, I began to cut off with my arrows the heads of theenemies of the celestials, from off that car of costly metals!
“Sanjaya said, ‘During the progress of that battle which was sodestructive of men and steeds and elephants, Subala’s son, Shakuni, Oking, rushed against Sahadeva.
