अध्याय 40
1 [वै]
गतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु तपस्विषु महात्मसु
पिनाक पाणिर भगवान सर्वपापहरॊ हरः
सन्यासी के किसी राज्य में महिलारोप्य नाम का एक नगर था| उस नगर से थोड़ी दूर पर भगवान शंकर का एक मंदिर बना हुआ था| उस मठ में तामचूड़ का एक सन्यासी निवास करता था| नगर में भिक्षादन कर वह अपनी जीविका चलाया करता था| भोजन से बचे हुए अन्न को वह भिक्षापत्र में रखकर उस पात्र का खूटी पर लटका दिया करता था, इस प्रकार वह निश्चित होकर रात्री में सो जाया करता था प्रात:कल वह उस अन्न को उस मन्दिर में कार्यरत श्रमिको को दे दिया करता था|
“Bhishma said, ‘The illustrious Atri, the son of the Grandsire Brahman,said, ‘They who make gifts of gold are said to make gifts of everythingin the world.’
1 वैशंपायन उवाच
वनवासाय चक्रुस ते मतिं पार्थाः पराजिताः
अजिनान्य उत्तरीयाणि जगृहुश च यथाक्रमम
“Sanjaya said, ‘When the field of battle which had before been envelopedin darkness and dust had thus become illuminated, heroic warriorsencountered one another, desirous of taking one another’s life.[218]
Yudhishthira said, “Tender, possessed of a graceful presence, anddeserving of every luxury as thou art, what office wilt thou, O heroicNakula, discharge while living in the dominions of that king? Tell me allabout it!”
“Vaisampayana said,–“While the illustrious Pandavas were seated in thatSabha along with the principal Gandharvas, there came, O Bharata, untothat assembly the celestial Rishi Narada, conversant with the Vedas and Upanishadas, worshipped by the celestials acquainted with histories and Puranas, well-versed in all that occurred in ancient kalpas (cycles), conversant with Nyaya (logic) and the truth of moral science, possessinga complete knowledge of the six Angas (viz., pronunciation, grammar,prosody, explanation of basic terms, description of religious rites, andastronomy).
