To conceptualize the substance in a logical manner, we need to understand about the traits of it. The ultimate substance can be called as ultimate reality because the real and the ultimate are to be the same.
Substance (reality) can be defined as under:-

- Objective existent
- Indivisible
- Timeless
- A-moral
- A-religious
- All-pervasive
- Independent of human ideation
- Organic consciousness
- Instantly perceivable
- Sharable
This can be the standard definition for the ultimate substance in the cosmos. Any element possessing these attributes shall logically qualify to be the basic, real and the ultimate. We know that no material element possess any of the aforementioned attributes as being mentioned above. The only substance fulfils all the attributes in non matter pervading the cosmic void. Matter originates in this, and vanishes into it. It shall remain even if the entire matter is destroyed. Its existence is not dependent on the thought – content of man. The non matter is the only one substance that truly qualifies to be declared as the ultimate reality of the cosmos. It is the first cause and original state of matter.
